Scars on the body caused by wounds after they are healed, or from surgical procedures, are unavoidable and inevitable. While some wounds might heal completely and leave no scar behind, some might and those scars might also stay forever. You might still have a scar on your knee from getting hurt while you were a kid! It is completely normal to have scars on the body, and they don’t affect any bodily functions. However, they might dent your confidence, especially if they are in areas like on the face, or if they are big ones. The good news is, you can get them minimized and lightened!
Scar revision essentially means performing a procedure on the scar to make it less visible and more blended with the skin around it. It does not remove the scar completely, and it might be visible is looked closely, but the procedure makes the scar negligible.
There are various surgical and non-surgical procedures that are in use for revision of scars.
Topical treatments such as over-the-counter creams and ointments are commonly used, and are the top home treatment option for minor scars and discolourations.
Another option is that of injectable treatments, wherein the dermatologist injects dermal fillers or steroidal compounds, depending on the type and the intensity of the scar, among other factors.
Surface treatments are mainly cosmetic procedures that are most commonly used for the revision of scars. These include dermabrasion, or the scraping and polishing of skin affected by the scar. Laser treatments are also commonly used now, to treat the skin surface, helping in healing of the scarred area and resulting in the growth of healthy skin.
Surgical treatments are usually only recommended in case of scars which cannot be treated via non-invasive procedures.
