Microdermabrasion (Subcision)

Overview

Microdermabrasion or Subcision is a cosmetic procedure with is an incision-less procedure for treating scars.  The procedure is performed with a special device that can reach beneath the scar and complete the subcision procedure.

Pathologically the depressed / pit scar exhibit 2 major issue – the formation of a fibrous band connecting the dermal layers with the subcutaneous layer, and healed area (scar) without the collagen. Subcision/microdermabrasion addresses these two issues by breaking the fibrous band and triggering the production of collagen in the depressed/pit scar resulting in a reduction in the scar depression/pit size making the skin surface uniform

Subcision procedure is completed in the following 3 steps

  • Skin is prepared by cleansing the acne scar area and treated with topical anesthesia
  • The special device – hypodermic needle; is inserted below the scar and the fibrous band is broken and the needle is withdrawn on completion of the procedure
  • Needle is removed and the wound is treated with pressure, and ice pack is placed for controlling the bleeding.
